18th Mar 2018, Kulim – The first stage of LTdL 2018 covered a total distance of 147.9km from Kangar, Perlis to Kulim, Kedah. In the 23rd edition, Andrea Guardini (Bardiani-CSF) finished the stage by extending his record to 23 stage wins in this race against Seo Joonyong (KSPO Bianchi Asia Procycling) and Debesay Mekseb (Team Dimension Data).
Not only Guardini was dubbed “Mr Langkawi” for sprinting 23 times in triumph at LTdL, the opening stage win also put Guardini in the yellow jersey as the overall leader of the race entering tomorrow’s stage, while he also leads the points classification with 19 points, seven ahead of Joonyong and nine ahead of third placed Wang Bo of Hengxiang Cycling Team.
Last of all, LTdL 2018 being his first UCI race with his new team, former national rider, Zulkiflie Nik Mohd Azwan from Forca Amskins Racing had a good start to the race as he was crowned the Best Malaysia Rider.
Stage 2 of LTdL 2018 will take riders from Gerik to Kota Bharu with the longer distance of the race, 208.3km. The stage includes a category 3 climb in Gerik and a category 1 climb at the Titiwangsa summit before three intermediate sprints await the peloton en route to the finish in Kota Bharu.
