1st Timer: Getting The Right Bike


Are you contemplating on buying a new bike or switching to another one?

Different bike sizes are produced to suit different cyclists’ heights and body dimensions. With the intensifying popularity of cycling, more riders seek to consult bike fit experts to boost comfort and performance, also to avoid injury when cycling.

For the beginners, a bike that is right for your height, flexibility and riding style is a bike you will enjoy riding. On the other hand, a bike that fits poorly can lead to inefficient riding, muscle aches and pains, and general discomfort that might infuriate you when riding.

For the regular cyclists whom fitness has improved through cycling, it is common to purchase a new bike in order to enhance the riding experience and performance. Whether or not you are riding on or off road, you are advised to choose not only the correct bike frames, but also the bike components with correct sizes.

Apart from buying a new bike, cyclists can replace different components according to your requirements. Therefore, knowing your height, inseam, torso length and arm length is crucial.

Let’s begin with a basic bike fit guide!

Measure shoulder width to determine the width of your handlebar.

Measure handlebar width to confirm with your measurement of shoulder width and provide comfortable hand position allowing for better steering. Incorrect sizes may encounter sore shoulders.

Measure arm length from your collarbone to the center of your palm to determine an adequate reach to the handlebar.

Adjust reach length between stem clamping area and saddle according to Step 3’s measurement. Accurate reach will avoid you from straining your back, neck and wrists.

If the reach is not correct, replace a stem. Acquring an ideal riding position requires you to look at the centre of wheelhub through the clamping area.

Measure inseam length by placing a leveling tool between your legs and a measurement tape from the ground vertically to the top of the tool in order to determine your frame size and seat height.

Adjust seat height according to Step 6’s measurement until you achieve a correct position.

Note: Being one of the contact points, correct pedal position and cleat alignment are essential for a comfortable ride. Poorly positioned feet can lead to knee and leg strains.

Measure saddle tilt in order to achieve a level surface.
