Organized annually by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and the Taiwan Bicycle Exporters Association (TBEA), Taipei Cycle 2017 celebrating its 30th Anniversary took place at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Centre from 22nd to 25th of March, attracting 22,113 visitors with 7,776 international buyers from 97 countries and 14,337 domestic visitors.

Compared to 2016, this year’s figure showed intensifying participation with an increment of 3% visitors and 6% exhibitors. Top 10 countries included China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, USA, Singapore, Germany, Malaysia, Philippines and Australia.

This event unveils some of the latest innovations and mesmerizing designs in the cycling technologies annually. In 2017, Taipei Cycle announced 57 winners of the Taipei Cycle d&i awards 2017, co-organized by TAITRA and Taiwan Bicycle Association (TBA) as well as executed by iF DESIGN ASIA Ltd.

Seven-judge jury for 2017 comprised proficient experts from Germany, the US and Taiwan, who have profound experience either in the cycling industry or industrial design. Taipei Cycle d&i awards provides a place of honor and recognition for the brilliant and talented brains in the trade.

The 7 top designs were recognized with the prestigious Taipei Cycle gold award, with winners hailing from Taiwan, China, France, and the United Kingdom. Selected out of following four categories: Bicycles, Components and Parts, Peripherals and Accessories, and E-bikes and Pedelecs, the jury panel was impressed with the variety of award-winning products this year.

This year, more e-bikes were entered into the competition and awarded due to the growing popularity of e-bikes, including e-road bikes, e-mountain bikes and e-city bikes. 3 out of 7 d&i gold award winners were e-bikes.

In 2018, on the suggestion of the bicycle industry, Taipei Cycle will move to October 31 to November 3, 2018.

All entries to the Taipei Cycle d&i awards were evaluated based on the following criteria:

SPEEDX
GOLD AWARD WINNERS

1. SPEEDX (Racing Bike)


It is a carbon fiber aero road bike with fully hidden wires and competition-level performance. Numerical data help riders train and track their progresses in real-time. An external port for the head light and camera is also provided. Its design elements also include hidden brakes and a bike frame to reduce friction and drag!

2. Bicycle Through Axle (Built-in Lever Design)


A new concept for easy installation. While the axle is not in operation, the lever is completely hidden in the axle body, meanwhile the appearance of the bike will be concise and increases the reliability of locking system to avoid impact with the lever. It omits the requirement of an allen key or a spanner wrench to operate the axle.

3. Internal Routing Tool (Bicycle Tools)

It is invented to improve efficiency and allow more people to have a better riding experience. Its compact shape makes it simple to use, and the self-contained design makes storage easy. Two adapters which can be stored within the tool alone with cable, housing, hydraulic hose, and e-shifting wire.

4. Tailfin (Bicycle Rack and Panniers)


Its rack and panniers allow cyclists to commute or tour on their road bikes. Weighed only at 650g per pannier and 350g for the rack, it is engineered to fit most road bikes. Certified to carry items up to 18kg, backpacks are suitable for short distances and light loads. Certainly a complete redesign of a bike accessory.

5. Tsinova Smart E-bike TS01 (E-bike + Pedelecs)

It is a powerful and stable automotive chip free scale for responsive calculations featuring a trapezoid body structure and a belt-driven system. It has a double-sided Torque sensor system together with pedalling frequency and speed sensor. Automotive Controller Area Network (CAN) bus technology provides it ultra-long battery life and convenient charging. iOS or Android apps are featured too!

6. eONE-SIXTY 900-E (eMTB Bike)

It is an all new category of eMTB with Enduro riding application, offers a serious MTB capable of hardcore, all-mountainous terrain riding which combines superb handling, riding dynamics and suspension-function of the best non-electric Eudora MTBs by adding the autonomy of uphill climbing.

7. Lapierre Overvolt AM Carbon (E-bike)

A trail bike that pushes e-powered design to new heights. Its lightweight carbon chassis, innovative mass centralization and cutting-edge technologies create a true electric MTB. Its handling is in its lowered centre of gravity. Battery is moved down against the motor and rotated forward centralizing mass in the frame for greater manoeuvrability. Compatible with 27.5 & 27.5+ wheels.

8. LINKA Lock (Smart Bike Lock)


It is the world’s first auto-unlocking smart bike lock wirelessly connecting to smartphones. Hard- mounted, and it allows riders to lock and unlock the bike with a simple press of a button. It will issue an alert directly to your smartphone if something happens to your bike. Smartphones will recognize your approach and unlock your bike automatically.
