Shah Alam – Marcus Culey and Team Sapura Cycling celebrated a monumental clean sweep of all four jerseys as brothers Harrif and Zamri Saleh bagged a one-two finish on the final stage to end the Tour de Selangor 2019 in Stage 5 from Klang to Shah Alam.
Culey, 26, who had swept all four stage win through solo breakaways prior to today, coasted to the finish in the safety of the peloton as teammate Mohd Nur Aiman Zariff, winner of the young riders’ classification, battled at the front in a bunch sprint that was won by Harrif ahead of Zamri.
The stage began with several breakaway attempts which were caught by the peloton as the Terengganu Inc TSG team of Harrif and Zamri took control, while Culey’s Sapura team seemed content with keeping watch to ensure matters didn’t become threatening to they leaders.
Eventually it was Sapura’s Mohd Zawawi Azman, winner of the 2017 edition of the race, who produced the lengthiest breakaway of the day accompanied by former teammate Aiman Cahyadi of PGN. The pair too barely managed by a gap of under a minute, which was pulled back by the peloton for a bunch sprint inside the final three kilometres.
There was then no question as to who would be the favourites, as the TSG squad placed Zamri in the commanding position to lead out his younger brother to victory while sustaining enough momentum to secure second spot ahead of PGN’s Shahrifat Nandamulya.
Culey coasted across the finish line in the bunch behind the winners, punching the air in triumph after completing what was evidently one of the most dominant performances in a stage racing anywhere.
Team Sapura Cycling also won the overall teams classification.
