Malakoff University Duathlon Series Back in Action


Kuala Lumpur, 18 April 2013 -  Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff) today launched the Malakoff University Duathlon Series (MUDS), a run-bike-run endurance race scheduled to be held over three Saturdays beginning 11 May at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM), followed by at Universiti Malaya (UM) on 18 May and the finals at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) on 1 June.

Registration for all three legs for the seventh edition of MUDS is currently open. The anticipated multi-sports challenge is expected to meet its targeted number of 900 duathletes as demonstrated by the enthusiastic support that it has garnered over the years.
Speaking about the launch, Zainal Abidin Jalil, the Chief Executive Officer of Malakoff said, “Malakoff actively supports community sporting events such as Malakoff University Duathlon Series as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility effort under its flagship platform - the Malakoff Community Partnerships. It is part of our commitment to sustain a steady growth of a Duathlete Community in Malaysia.”
“Malakoff University Duathlon Series is specifically designed with a manageable race well suited for anyone who enjoys running or biking. I am pleased that the community especially non-professionals and varsity students have responded well to the event based on the growing number of participation,” he added.
The inaugural MUDS was held in 2003 with a total of 321 duathletes. Since then, the unwavering support for the event from the public and private universities as well as the sporting community has contributed to the event’s growth momentum, recording close to 750 participants taking part in the race last year.
The upcoming MUDS will kick-start the first leg of the Series at UPNM on 11 May with a race distance comprising of a 3km Run – 13.8km Bike - 3km Run. The second race will be hosted at UM the following Saturday with participants putting their stamina to the test with a 3km Run – 11.4km Bike – 3.5km Run distance. The Series will then culminate on 1 June at UPM with a 3km Run – 13km Bike – 3km Run sequence.
 “The first leg of the Series is less than a month away. I hope everyone has taken out their trainers and started their training! As the race is designed with a manageable distance, we are anticipating a good crowd of first-timers, providing a healthy challenge to those who are returning to race again,” said Zainal.
“We hope that joining MUDS provides an inspiration to the participants to push their limits further by taking on large tournaments such as the Malakoff Powerman Asian Duathlon Championships,” he added.
The race is open in two categories, Individual and Team Relay. The Individual Category is divided into five sub-categories: Men’s University, Women’s University, Men’s Open, Women’s Open and Media. Team Relay is open in two categories: Men’s Team Relay and Mixed Team Relay.
Top five winners for the University and Open categories plus the top three winners for the Team Relay and Media categories will each receive placing medals. Participants who finish within the stipulated time will also be given certificates to acknowledge their achievements.
As an added incentive, the Top University Trophy will be presented to the university with the highest participation in the three legs and the Best University Trophy to the university with the best results throughout the series.
An avid duathlete, Afif b Ariffin from UPNM who will be participating in MUDS for the fifth consecutive year said, “I encourage everyone especially students to challenge themselves by competing at MUDS. The race distance is definitely manageable even for beginners with ample preparation.”
Speaking on UPNM’s team preparation this year, En Mohd Hilmi bin Jalil, the Extreme Sports Coordinator for UPNM added, “I am proud that UPNM has bagged the Top University Trophy for 5 consecutive years, establishing itself as a formidable contender for other universities to beat. With regular trainings, we hope to be able to retain the championship title once again.”
